Skin Characteristics
The skin is the largest human organ. The skin is the body’s waterproof protective barrier against external mechanical, environmental, chemical and physical effects. This barrier can self-repair when damaged. The skin also contains nerves that carry the sensations of touch and pain.
Skin Layers
Skin Layers
Epidermis:The epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin) is the outer layer of the skin made up of dead cells. These cells are constantly shed, and regenerated cells gradually emerge from below the surface. A pigment called melanin is produced in the lowest layer of the epidermis.
Dermis:The dermis consists of collagen networks, elastic fibers, nerves, fat, blood vessels, sweat glands and hair follicles. The task of the dermis is to support the epidermis with nutrients to provide mechanical strength and defend the body against infections.
Hypodermis:: The hypodermis is also called the tissue under the skin. It is the deepest and thickest layer of the skin. It is a loose network of connective tissue.
Hair Development:
The human hair life cycle has 4 phases. Hair follicles are not synchronized and therefore hairs close to each other can be in different phases at the same time. On the other hand, hormonal effects following birth or serious infections may provide synchronization of the hair growth cycle.
Causes of Unwanted Hair
