Findings and Tests

The visible symptoms of sweating may occur during our examination in our clinic. There are also some tests that will reveal whether the sweating is excessive.
Starch-iodine test. Iodine is applied to the sweating area. After drying, starch is sprinkled on the same area. The color of the starch-iodine mixture in the area of excessive sweating will turn dark blue. Paper test. A special paper is placed on the area affected by sweat to absorb sweat, and then this paper is weighed. The weight difference is considered an indication of the amount of sweating. The patient may also be asked the following questions:

  • Is the sweating area on the face, palms or armpits?
  • Does the sweating area spread to the whole body?
  • Does sweating usually start at night?
  • Does sweating start suddenly?
  • How long has it been going on?
  • Does it occur when you remember a traumatic event?
  • Do you also experience other symptoms? (eg weight loss, palpitations, loss of appetite)
  • Are your hands cold and damp?
  • Do you have a fever?
